The Johnson Atomsmashers were the 63-39 winner over the Savannah Country Day Hornets when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Johnson took a 62-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of Savannah Country Day on Saturday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Johnson came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 132nd, while Savannah Country Day is ranked 266th).
Johnson's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Joshua Quarterman, who scored 21 points along with three steals. Quarterman has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Favion Kirkwood, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds.
Savannah Country Day got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Rudy Anderson out in front who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 16 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Anderson pulled down eight or more rebounds. Robert Spaulding iv was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Johnson and nudges their season record down to 10-8. As for Savannah Country Day, their win bumped their record up to 6-11.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Johnson will take on Savannah Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Savannah Country Day, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Long County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
