It's award season. The sport is volleyball. And the most recognized name very well could be
Mikaela Foecke. Pick an all-star or all-American list and Foecke is on it.
And without exception, the trend continues as the
Holy Trinity Catholic (Fort Madison, Iowa) player is 2014 MaxPreps Small Schools National Player of the Year.
Foecke (pronounced Feek-ee) was named to MaxPreps' overall All-American Team last week.

The 6-foot-3 middle blocker slammed 812 kills and amassed 270 digs, 170 service aces and 95 blocks this past season, leading the Crusaders to a 48-4 record and the school's first state title in any sport. She concluded her prep career with a state-record 2,813 kills, which will put her No. 5 in the National Federation of State High School Associations all-time career list.
"Mikaela is a dynamic player who has so much positive energy," said coach Melissa Freesmeier. "Mikaela is a true team player who strives to always be the best. Mikaela is a team leader in every aspect of the game emotionally, spiritually and physically. Mikaela goes beyond our expectations."
Named the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year, Foecke is a perennial MaxPreps All-American and was MaxPreps' 2013 National Junior Player of the Year. She has also been selected as an Under Armour First Team All-America honoree as well as an American Family Insurance All-American.
Foecke was also the Iowa Girls Coaches Association co-Player of the Year, captain of the Class 1A All-State Tournament Team and was selected for the Iowa Girls Coaches Association and the Des Moines Register Elite All-State teams.
Foecke started for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team that won a gold medal at the U-20 NORCECA Continental Championships this past July.
A Future Nebraska Cornhusker, Foecke has maintained a 4.10 GPA in the classroom. With her in the lineup, Holy Trinity won 179 matches and lost 16.
When asked how she will replace Foecke, Freesmeier said, "We don't. Mikaela is an exceptional athlete and an even better person. Mikaela is an athlete younger kids look up to and someone I am proud to have coached."
Coach of the Year - Amy Reed, Gate City (Va.)Reed led the Blue Devils to their sixth 2A state title and second in a row. By winning all 30 of their matches this season, they have stretched their winning streak to 56.

Hayley Wolfe, Gate City lost only eight sets while winning 85. Senior
Kyra Jessee was also honored as an all-state performer.
Team of Year - Elida (N.M.)The 26-0 Tigers won their fifth-straight state title and seventh in school history when they won New Mexico's 1A title.
Coached by Darrell Chenault, Elida has won 115 of its last 126 matches and 57 of its last 58. In 2014, they outscored their opponents 78-11.
The Tigers dominated the New Mexico 1A All-State Team as four players –
Marily Varela,
Kynzi Creighton,
Kenzee Criswell and
Lauren Stone were named to the first team and
Taylor Epps was named to the second team.
2014 MaxPreps Small Schools Volleyball All-American Team
OH - Alyssa Schultejans, Silver Lake (Kan.), 6-2 SRSchultejans finished her career as the state's all-time kills leader with 1,985. She had 732 kills this year as Silver Lake won its second-straight Class 3A state title and was named to the Under Armour High School All-America second team. She will attend Kansas State.
OH - Melanie McHenry, Speedway (Ind.), 6-2 JR

One of the most prolific hitters east of the Rockies, McHenry led Speedway to a 26-9 record when she killed 798 (7.1) of her 1,485 attempts. She also recorded 79 aces, 78 blocks, 415 digs (3.6) and only 13 errors in 496 serve receptions. She has committed to Louisville. And she played kicker for the football team.
OH - Katie Kampen, Mt. Carmel (New Orleans), 5-11 SRShe
was her state's Gatorade POY winner twice, including this year when she
led the Cubs to a 47-2 record and the D-1 state championship. Kampen
recorded 572 kills, 380 digs, 80 blocks and 55 service aces. The state's
2014 Miss Volleyball, Kampen is a 2014 second team all-America
selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. She concluded
her prep volleyball career with 1,983 kills and 1,501 digs. She has
signed with LSU.
OH - Carley Remmers, Freeman (Adams, Neb.), 6-1 SRAn all-state player, Remmers propelled the Falcons to an undefeated Class C-2 state championship season. Remmers unloaded 449 kills (.456 pct.), 95 blocks and 301 digs. She finished her career with a school-record 1,514 kills, 231 blocks, 218 ace serves and 1,182 digs. Remmers, who was named to the state Super Elite team, will attend Ohio.
MB - Brittany Corder, Our Lady Academy (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), 5-10 SRCorder led the Crescents to a 41-2 record and the Class I state title this past season. Corder recorded 441 kills, 47 service aces and 40 blocks to go with a hitting percentage of .511. Last season, she was selected to the All-State Tournament team, the All-Region team and the Sun Herald All-Coast team.
MB - Kelly Vahos, Haldane (Cold Spring, N.Y.), 6-2 SRHeaded to James Madison, Vahos had 499 kills (6.1), 67 aces (91 percent serving) and 66 blocks in leading her team to a 22-4 record and fourth-straight state tournament trip.
MH - Mariah Whalen, Newman (Wausau, Wis.), 6-1 SOWhalen finished with 831 kills and more than 1,500 attacks for Newman this fall, helping the Cardinals repeat as D-4 state champions. Along the way she had 53 blocks, 102 aces, 280 digs and earned all-state tournament honors and first team all-state honors. Whalen also is the Gannett Central Wisconsin Media's volleyball POY.
MB - Tiani Reeves, Gothenburg (Neb.), 6-1 SR

Reeves, the only repeat first-team Super-Stater in 2014, battled illness and injury to lead the Swedes team to 20 wins. Reeves still managed to pound 405 kills while also putting down 64 blocks. Reeves, the defending Class B girls long jump and triple jump state champion, will attend Nebraska.
MB - Nicole Fleitman, Lindsay (Texas), 6-2 SRIn addition to surpassing her junior year total for kills with 1,025, Fleitman totaled a .433 hitting percentage. She also collected 73 blocks to go with 406 digs on the season, in addition to 122 aces.
S - Rachel Koop, Dike-New Hartford (Dike, Iowa), 5-9 SRKoop has helped DNH to four consecutive state championships. She is a four-time first team all-state honoree, chosen as captain of this year's squad. She averaged 9.1 assists and had 45 blocks and 132 digs. Koop has signed with Northern Iowa University.
S - Shannon Mikesky, Schulenburg (Texas), 6-0 SRIn leading the Shorthorns to a 43-8 season and the Texas 2A title, Mikesky dished out 1,335 assists (8.7), recorded 531 digs (3.5), blocked 58 balls, served 95.2 with 153 aces and had 340 kills. She will attend Alabama.
S - Emma Cary, Providence Christian (Dothan, Ala.), 5-7 SRCary recorded 1,323 assists, 144 kills, 323 digs and a team-high 151 aces as the Eagles won a school-record 58 wins, highlighted by a school-record 56 straight wins. She also helped PCS earn state runner-up honors. For her career, she helped PCS to 160 wins and to the state finals three times, earning one state title. She is the second member of her family to win Dothan Eagle Player of the Year honors, as her sister Sara won in 2009.
L - Amber MacDonald, Blessed Trinity (Roswell, Ga.), 5-4 SRThe Titans won two state championships during MacDonald's tenure, including in 2014, and advanced to the state tournament finals all four years. She finished her career with 2,355 digs, including 787 as a senior. MacDonald, who is second all-time in Georgia state history in career digs, has committed to Wisconsin.
ALL-AROUND - Ashley Laborde, St. John Lutheran (Ocala, Fla.), 5-9 SRLaborde — who signed with the University of North Florida — finished her final season at St. John Lutheran with 444 kills, 456 digs, 43 aces and 48 blocks while hitting at a .574 clip. In leading her team to a 26-1 record and a state title, LaBorde was named Florida's 2A Player of the Year. Her father, Jason, was named Coach of the Year.
A-A - Rachel Holthaus, Winona (Mo.), 6-0 SRHolthaus was among the national leaders in kills per set at 7.6 and averaged 3.7 digs per set. She is the main reason Winona competes with any team any night of the week and was 28-5-5 with the small school state title to its credit. She also served at a 99.7 percent clip. Holthaus will attend Eastern Illinois University.
A-A - Jenn Wineholt, Parker (San Diego), 6-0 JRKnown for her leadership, Wineholt quarterbacked the Lancers to their third-straight state title and ninth overall. She showed her versatility in the state title win with 28 assists and seven blocks. And in the semifinal match, she had 10 kills, 14 digs, six blocks and 30 assists. She has committed to Virginia. She was first team All-CIF San Diego Section as well as first team All-San Diego area.
