Independence and the Riverbend Bears squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly Independence had to settle for second. Independence's tough 41-16 defeat to Riverbend might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Independence can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 129th, while Riverbend is ranked 28th).
Independence's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Mickey Keller, who rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry. Keller has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last three times he's played. Justin Jordan was another key contributor, picking up 146 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Riverbend got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Tanner Triplett out in front who threw for 156 yards and four touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes. Amir Mateo also deserves a shout-out for his three touchdowns.
Independence's loss dropped their record down to 4-7. As for Riverbend, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.
Independence does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Riverbend will head out on the road to face off against Briar Woods at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
