The Lab University Prep Lab Rats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fourth straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 66-35 loss at the hands of Northside Christian Academy. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Lab University Prep came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 20th, while Northside Christian Academy is ranked 78th).
Despite the defeat, Lab University Prep saw an underclassman step up: Sophie Dumler scored 11 points along with three steals. Dumler scored a full 31.4% of Lab University Prep's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kali Dancy, who scored six points.
Northside Christian Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jakaila Gaskin led the charge by dropping a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. Gaskin continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Laylah Toscano , who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Lab University Prep's loss dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Northside Christian Academy, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-5.
Lab University Prep does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Northside Christian Academy will be playing in front of their home fans against Concord Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
