Orland and Gridley are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Trojans will face off against the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Orland barely beat Oroville the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Trojans put the hurt on the Tigers with a sharp 24-1 victory on Friday. The Trojans have beaten the Tigers the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Tigers has come to flipping the script.
Dottie Davis was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-6 with four runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Gracie Cutshall was incredible, firing off two triples, three runs, and four RBI while going 5-for-5. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Emma Cutshall, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Orland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .422. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Oroville only posted a batting average of .062.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Gridley, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. Everything went their way against Live Oak on Friday as they made off with a 12-2 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Bulldogs needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.
Kaydenze Pruitt made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Pruitt was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Gridley got a massive performance out of Chevie Crislip, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. Alexis Alcantar was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Gridley pushed their record up to 15-5 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Orland, their record is now 13-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Orland has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Gridley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Orland took their victory against Gridley in their previous meeting back in April by a conclusive 14-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
