After a string of 12 wins, the Pagosa Springs Pirates's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 34-33 to Ignacio. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Pagosa Springs came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while Ignacio is ranked 152nd).
When it comes to explaining why Pagosa Springs lost, one person who can't be blamed is Annie O?Donnell. Despite the final result, she scored 14 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points O?Donnell has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Elizabeth Currier, who scored seven points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Pagosa Springs smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. This was only their first loss (out of five games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Ignacio can attribute much of their success to Marissa Olguin, who scored 14 points. Soly Cosio was another key contributor, scoring four points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Pagosa Springs' loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-4. As for Ignacio, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-8.
Pagosa Springs won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Alamosa at 2:30 p.m. on February 3rd. Hopefully Pagosa Springs focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Friday. As for Ignacio, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Bayfield at 1:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Ignacio is facing Bayfield at the right time seeing as Bayfield is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
