Hughesville is 8-2 against Southern Columbia Area since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Spartans will host the Tigers at 4:30 p.m. Hughesville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
Hughesville's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. Everything went their way against Bloomsburg as they made off with a 12-0 victory. The Spartans haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Hughesville got a great performance from Blake Babb as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over 6.1 innings pitched. Babb has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jedidiah Abernatha was a standout: he scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Brenden Fisher, who scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Southern Columbia Area's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Loyalsock Township on Friday. The Tigers came out on top against Mifflinburg by a score of 5-2.
Levi Everitt spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on four hits and racked up 11 Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Caden Hopper, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2. Southern Columbia Area is 6-1 when Hopper posts two or more runs, but 1-2 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Makowski, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Southern Columbia Area pushed their record up to 7-3 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Hughesville, their victory bumped their record up to 5-1.
Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hughesville has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .471. However, it's not like Southern Columbia Area struggles in that department as they've averaged .506. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Hughesville's way against Southern Columbia Area in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Hughesville made off with a 10-4 win. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
