The Cooper Cougars will square off against the Abilene Eagles at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Cooper will bounce into Saturday's contest after beating Wylie, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. Cooper walked away with an 11-8 win over Wylie on Tuesday. With that victory, the Cougars brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Cooper got a big performance out of Natalyn Kuhn, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs. Angelic Gonzalez was another key player, scoring a run while going 4-for-4.
Meanwhile, Abilene entered their tilt with Memorial on Tuesday with two consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Mavericks a 13-0 shutout. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by six runs or more this season.
Abilene also got a great performance from Avah Reyes as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Reyes has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Kinzley Cantu was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and five RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Germanie Williams, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Abilene was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .450. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Abilene's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-7. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Cooper, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 11-8 record.
Cooper might still be hurting after the 8-0 loss they got from Abilene in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Cooper avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
