West Union is 0-10 against East Union since March of 2017 but things could change on Saturday. The Eagles will head out to take on the Urchins at 12:00 p.m. West Union is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
West Union managed to slip by Marshall Academy the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Eagles lost 7-1 to the Patriots on Friday.
Meanwhile, East Union entered their tilt with Baldwyn on Thursday with ten consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with 11. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Bearcats a 12-0 shutout. Give the Urchins' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's fifth straight shutout.
Hunter Huffstatler made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted two strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. He also put up a home run, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Ethan Lamontagne was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-1. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Daniel Whitfield, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
East Union's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for West Union, they now have a losing record of 11-12.
Saturday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. West Union has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .439. However, it's not like East Union struggles in that department as they've averaged .477. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
