The Nixon Mustangs came tearing into Friday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 33.2 points) and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on Rio Grande City with a sharp 72-52 victory. Given Nixon's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 280th, while Rio Grande City is ranked 632nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Mason Vela, who scored 30 points along with six rebounds and three steals. He continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. William Palumbo was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Nixon pushed their record up to 18-9 with that win, which was their third straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.0 points per game. As for Rio Grande City, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-12.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Nixon will take on Roma at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Roma has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 12. As for Rio Grande City, they the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Juarez-Lincoln at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Juarez-Lincoln is coming into the game on a four-game losing streak.
