WPIAL A Big Seven recap October 1, 2013
Sto-Rox extended the longest winning streak in WPIAL A Big Seven this week by beating Northgate, 58-0. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Union Area moved up to 330 from 377 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Scotties were able to move up by falling to Laurel 20-19.
Neshannock's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ernie Burkes threw for 227 and 3 touchdowns and Tyler Perry had 86 yards receiving. On the ground Burkes chipped in 95 yards. Eli Owens helped Neshannock's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 49 yards.
He was 15-20 with 0 interception.
Burkes put up the best numbers through the air as the Lancers bested South Side. Burkes' favorite target this week was Perry, who caught 5 passes for 86 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Burkes and Owens, Neshannock has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Burkes leads the league in passing with 460 yards, while Owens has rushed for 636 yards this season. The Spartan's Clayton Sharek leads the league in receiving yards with 243 on 8 catches.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when Laurel's Sharek goes up against Western Beaver's Nick Miller.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Sto-Rox takes on Union Area. As it stands, Dan Bradley's team is in first, while Stacy Robinson's team is in fifth.
Pat Cuba's team and the Scotties played the most contested game in WPIAL A Big Seven this week, with Pat Cuba's team eventually emerging with a 20-19 victory.
