Softball Recap: South Mountain Takes a Loss

South Mountain had lost six straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 7-13-1 to make it seven. They lost 9-3 to the Maryvale Panthers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Jaguars of the 22-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2022.

South Mountain saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alexia Ramirez, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Ramirez is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.

As for Maryvale, their record is now 10-7. Considering they have won six matches by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

On Maryvale's side, Isabel Hernandez was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out 17 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Hernandez was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, Maryvale let Jaline Ortega and Marianna Jennings run wild. Ortega went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs, while Jennings went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. That's the most doubles Jennings has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Ivette Hernandez Mojica, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Looking ahead, Maryvale will be playing at home against Shadow Ridge at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Stallions have averaged an impressive 8.9 runs per game this season. South Mountain will be paying especially close attention to Maryvale's game: after Maryvale faces off against Shadow Ridge, they'll take on South Mountain again at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
