Downriver recap Oct. 16, 2012
Woodhaven extended the longest winning streak in Downriver this week by beating Trenton, 29-13. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Warriors.
The Trojans moved up to 345 from 390 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Trenton climbed the ranks as a result of losing to Woodhaven 29-13.
Devin Goodwell put up the best numbers through the air as Truman bested Carlson. He finished with a total of three completions for 87 yards and one touchdown. Goodwell's favorite target this week was Cortez Gardner, who caught two passes for 79 yards.
Devan Stewart was the best wideout in the league this week as Roosevelt defeated Allen Park. Stewart tallied four receptions for 93 yards. Brandon Sowards helped Roosevelt's passing attack out by catching three balls for 53 yards.
Nick Maher was the most productive running back in Downriver this week. He ran for 314 yards on 23 carries as Keith Christnagel's team bested the Jaguars. Teammate Garrett Weirich added to the ground attack by rushing for 131 yards.
Roosevelt's Kevin Matejko and Stewart have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Matejko has thrown for 1273 yards this season, while Stewart, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 26 catches for 611 yards. Maher from the Warriors leads the league in rushing with 1489 yards.
The Marauders' Marcus Carter needs only 100 yards against Woodhaven next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Carter has rushed for 900 yards on 92 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Carlson takes on the Warriors. Kent Sikora's team is in sixth place, while Woodhaven is in first place.
The Cougars took down the Marauders 46-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Devonte McGregor ran for 135 yards in the win.
