The Middle Creek Mustangs will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the South Johnston Trojans at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Middle Creek will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
Even though Middle Creek has not done well against Athens Drive recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Middle Creek enjoyed a cozy 65-46 win over Athens Drive. Given Middle Creek's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 137th, while Athens Drive is ranked 392nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Alysia Pergerson continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 23 points along with five steals. Pergerson is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Ava Skladanowski, who scored 14 points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, South Johnston fought the good fight in their overtime match against Southern Nash last Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Firebirds 34-28. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points South Johnston has scored all season.
Middle Creek's win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.6 points per game. As for South Johnston, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
