The Centennial Eagles are packing up and heading out on the road for their first away game this season: they will challenge the Vero Beach Indians at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Centennial is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Centennial's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. They blew past South Fork 6-0. The victory continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won four in a row.
Hailey Brereton made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season.
Brereton wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Autumn Prakash, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Prakash also hit a double, marking her first of the season.
For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Vero Beach and Sebastian River meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Tuesday. Vero Beach sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 win over Sebastian River. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Indians have posted since March 7, 2024.
Like Centennial, Vero Beach also got a great game from a two-way player: Gabrielle Espich. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Furthermore, Espich didn't allow a single walk, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Vero Beach let Trinity Bishop and Kylie Williams run wild. Bishop went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Williams scored a run while going 1-for-4.
Centennial's win bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Vero Beach, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Vero Beach's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Centennial has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .446. It's a different story for Vero Beach, though, as they've only averaged .347. Will they be able to contain Centennial's hitters?
Centennial was able to grind out a solid victory over Vero Beach in their previous matchup last Tuesday, winning 5-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for Centennial since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
