Wharton had a senior duo take command as Brandon Sims Jr rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries and Ja'Keon Jackson threw for 169 yards and four TDs while completing 85.7% of his passes. Jackson's passing game has become a key predictor of the Tigers' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 2-3 otherwise. Javien Smith also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Wharton, adding 12 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Sims Jr, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a punt return touchdown from Smith.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Royal). They blew past Harmony School of Innovation 59-6 on Friday. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 44-0.
Wharton better keep an eye on Tyler Gilmore. He was instrumental in Royal's win, rushing for 157 yards and four scores on only eight carries. Another player making a difference was Emory Oliver, who rushed for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Royal's run defense was locked in: Harmony School of Innovation could only muster 1.5 yards per carry. The team can thank Terry Colquitt for the heroic effort on defense: he. Royal's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 3.48 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 9.17 on average over their last five games.
The win made it two in a row for Wharton and bumps their season record up to 5-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 0 points in those games. As for Royal, the win was their first at home , bumping their record up to 3-5.
Wharton couldn't quite get it done against Royal in their previous matchup back in November of 2024 as they fell 38-30. Will the Tigers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
