Big Rivers recap Oct. 9, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Rice Lake, who took down 69th ranked Eau Claire Memorial, 33-6.
Menomonie extended the longest winning streak in Big Rivers this week by beating Superior, 35-8. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
The Spartans' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Nick Mehlum threw for 55 and one touchdown and Ben Erickson had 46 yards receiving. On the ground Jaylon Brown chipped in 41 yards. Matt Little helped Superior's passing attack out by catching one ball for 36 yards.
Spencer Urban provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Superior lost to Joe Labuda's team. He completed seven passes for 75 yards and also ran for seven yards.
Superior's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Spartans feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Urban has thrown for 773 yards and six touchdowns this season, while Erickson has 18 catches for 232 yards. Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate leads the league in rushing with 298 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Hudson and Menomonie. The Raiders comes into the matchup ranked fourth in the state, while Menomonie ranks 17th.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Hudson takes on Menomonie. Adam Kowles' team has allowed 68 points this season, while Menomonie has given up 79.
The Warriors moved up to 56 from 90 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Big Rivers. Rice Lake was able to make the jump by beating the Old Abes 33-6.
