Softball Game Preview: Alonso Ravens vs. Gaither Cowboys

Alonso and Gaither are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2015, but likely not for long. After both having extra time off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Alonso will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.

It was a Battle of the Birds when Alonso challenged Leto last Wednesday. Alonso blew past Leto 13-1. Considering the Ravens have won three contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

The team relied heavily on Laine Anderson, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Jolie Perillo also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Alonso was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 21 runs the game before, Gaither was a bit more limited in their game last Tuesday. They fell just short of Chamberlain by a score of 3-2.

Carolyn Emanuel made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Russell, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

Gaither's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 4-4. As for Alonso, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

Gaither's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Alonso has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Gaither, though, as they've been averaging only 2.6 strikeouts. Will Alonso keep running through batters, or will Gaither buck the trend?

Alonso couldn't quite finish off Gaither in their previous matchup on March 4th and fell 2-0. Can Alonso avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
