5A Region 3 recap Sept. 26, 2012
West Jones extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week by beating South Jones, 56-26. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
Wayne County was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to third in the league. Earlier in the week, the War Eagles defeated Pearl 41-12.
McComb's dynamic duo of Alex Woodall and Quatavious Smith proved tough for Stone to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Woodall threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Smith had 100 yards receiving. Kevonte Dillon helped McComb's passing attack out by catching two balls for 54 yards.
Trey Keyes was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 214 yards on 15 carries as West Jones bested the Tomcats. D.J. Sanders also contributed to the rushing game with 95 yards on the ground.
Pierre Pryer provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Wingfield fell to Brookhaven. He completed 19 passes for 180 yards and also ran for 142 yards. Pryer's favorite target this week was Donte' Purvis, who caught 11 passes for 61 yards.
McComb's Woodall and Smith have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region 3 in both passing and receiving yards. Woodall has thrown for 598 yards this season, while Smith, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 14 catches for 309 yards. Ben Cooley from the Braves leads the league in rushing with 552 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Scott Pierson's team takes on Stone. The Mustangs are currently in first, while the Tomcats are in fifth.
West Jones took down South Jones 56-26 last week, the largest margin of any game. Keyes caught one passes for 55 yards in the win.
