Byrd (Shreveport, La.) jumped out to an early lead against
Captain Shreve (Shreveport, La.) and never looked back on the way to a 37-14 victory on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets scored 17 points in the first quarter. Byrd scored on a rushing touchdown, a touchdown run by
J.d. Lorence and a field goal.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run in the first quarter, BHS led 30-7 at the half.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 23 entering the fourth.
Lorence was the top performer for the Yellow Jackets. The senior quarterback ran for two touchdowns and kicked one extra point.
The Gators'
Weylin Goodie played well. The junior running back ran for one touchdown.
Byrd entered the contest giving up 20.9 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding Captain Shreve below its season average of 18.0 points scored per game.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 35-10 win for the Yellow Jackets.
Captain Shreve (4-5) goes up against Parkway in a 5A District 1 game matchup next week, while Byrd (6-2) locks horns with Airline also in a 5A District 1 game.
