The San Juan Broncos will head out on the road to face off against the Bayfield Wolverines at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. San Juan is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.9 points per game this season.
Last Saturday, San Juan came up short against Duchesne and fell 49-42. The Broncos have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their defeat, San Juan saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Cole Duke, who went 6 for 11 on his way to 13 points and six rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Jagger Nieves, who posted nine points and six rebounds.
Even though they lost, San Juan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in seven consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Bayfield entered their tilt with Telluride on Saturday with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They took their game with ease, bagging a 76-31 win over the Miners. That looming 76-31 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Wolverines yet this season.
San Juan better focus on containing Cooper Roderick and Lincoln Williams as the pair were huge in Bayfield's win. Roderick went 7 of 10 from beyond the arc on his way to 30 points and four steals, while Williams almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine assists. Williams is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 26 games he's played dating back to last season. Vincent McCullough was another key player, putting up six points and nine rebounds.
Bayfield's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-3. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.3 points per game. As for San Juan, their loss dropped their record down to 6-8.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as San Juan and Bayfield are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. San Juan hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 55.9 points per game. However, it's not like Bayfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 55.9 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Everything came up roses for San Juan against Bayfield when the teams last played back in December of 2023, as the squad secured a 71-40 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for San Juan since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
