After both having extra time off, the Dunedin Falcons and the Hudson Cobras will dust off their jerseys to take on one another at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Dunedin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
While Dunedin didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past Pinellas Park 11-1 last Thursday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Falcons.
Cael Rogers and Abby McLemore made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Rogers tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, McLemore tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Rogers has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Rogers scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while McLemore scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
In other batting news, Maelaea Johnson and Lucy Bond did most of the damage at the plate: Johnson scored two runs while going 2-for-3, while Bond went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Aliyah Roseman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI.
Dunedin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .560. The last time their batting average was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Hudson was not able to break out of their rough patch last Thursday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They fell 5-2 to Pasco. That's two games in a row now that the Cobras have lost by exactly three runs.
Hudson saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jesse Anderson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. That run marked the first that Anderson scored this season.
Dunedin's victory was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Hudson, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.
Hudson's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Dunedin has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Hudson, though, as they've been averaging only 3.3 strikeouts. Will Dunedin keep running through batters, or will Hudson buck the trend?
Dunedin took their win against Hudson in their previous matchup back in March of 2020 by a conclusive 19-2. Will Dunedin repeat their success, or does Hudson have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
