The Northwestern Huskies will venture away from home to challenge the Southeast Pirates at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Northwestern will be strutting in after a victory while Southeast will be coming in after a loss.
Northwestern saw some tournament action on Wednesday. They blew past Rootstown 11-4. The Huskies might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matches by seven runs or more this season.
Taylor Wurst spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Coralyn Hall, who went 1-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Cuber, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
St. Vincent-St. Mary hit Southeast with a five-run seventh inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pirates lost 6-0 to the Fighting Irish. The game marked the first time this season in which the Pirates were not able to get on the board.
Southeast also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Lilly Hayes gave up only one earned (and five unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Southeast saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Miranda Timko, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
Northwestern has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-10 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Southeast, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-8.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Northwestern hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .360. However, it's not like Southeast struggles in that department as they've averaged .353. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
