Cooper Chisum made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits (and only one walk). Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Samson Ortega was excellent, going 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Fort Morgan: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Izeiah Ortiz, who got on base in two of his five plate appearances with two runs.
Fort Morgan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .525. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Weld Central was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They fell 9-6 to Liberty Common.
Weld Central saw nine different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Luke Witzel, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Pierce Thoene was another, going 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Fort Morgan's victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 6-9. As for Weld Central, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 6-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Fort Morgan has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Weld Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Fort Morgan's way against Weld Central in their previous meeting back in March of 2022, as Fort Morgan made off with a 20-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
