4A Region I District 2 recap Oct. 9, 2012
Canutillo's Andrew Lopez recorded the longest rushing play in 4A Region I District 2 this season in his game against Riverside last week. Lopez ran for 84 yards on the play and finished with 135 on the day as his team defeated the Rangers.
Canutillo moved up to 580 from 632 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 21-14 win over Riverside helped Scott Brooks' team improve its standing.
Hanks's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Emilio Noriega threw for 284 and three touchdowns and Patrick Pettis had 114 yards receiving. On the ground Dominique Carter chipped in 242 yards. Dorian Zubia helped Hanks' passing attack out by catching three balls for 59 yards.
JOHN WASCHAK made the biggest impact on defense this week as Parkland fell to Horizon. The junior pulled down two interceptions and recorded one fumble.
6-foot-1 quarterback Noriega of the Knights is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1059. He has also thrown 11 touchdowns. On the ground, the Matadors' RAMON RENTERIA has rushed for 577 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Hilario Soto. The Horizon star has 17 catches for 415 yards.
A big matchup in 4A Region I District 2 this week will be when Hanks takes on Del Valle. Jeff Cleveland's team is in second place, while the Conquistadores are in third place.
Del Valle extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating San Elizario, 43-0. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
