Basketball Recap: Sparta Academy Comes Up Short

Sparta Academy lost against Edgewood Academy back in February and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Sparta Academy Warriors fell to the Edgewood Academy Wildcats 54-49. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

When it comes to explaining why Sparta Academy lost, don't look at Kaitlyn Johnson. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 25 points and 15 rebounds. Johnson has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Carly Gauna, who posted ten points.

Edgewood Academy found their leader in sophomore Lexie Smith, who went 14 of 32 on her way to 35 points in addition to six steals and five boards. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Elizabeth Ellis, who had five points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Sparta Academy's loss dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Edgewood Academy, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season.

Sparta Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 52-20 victory against Crenshaw Christian Academy on the 17th. As for Edgewood Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 69-65 win against Macon-East Montgomery Academy on the 19th.
