Cameron came into Thursday's contest looking for another win against Notre Dame, but Piper Fryer wouldn't allow it. The Fighting Irish had just enough and edged out the Dragons 3-2 with plenty of help from Fryer, who had 42 digs, 13 kills, and eight aces. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 12.2 assists per game.
If you add up the scores from across all five sets (111-109) Notre Dame actually scored fewer points, but in the end it didn't matter. The match finished with set scores of 25-20, 28-26, 16-25, 25-27, 15-13.
Notre Dame relied on the efforts of Sophie Gum, who had 29 digs, 13 kills, three blocks, and three aces, and Brayleigh Scheuvront, who had 27 digs, 13 kills, and four aces. That's the most aces Scheuvront has posted over her last six matches. The team also got some help courtesy of Angelina Policano, who had 21 digs and six kills.
They weren't the only good servers: Notre Dame was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 18 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least 11 aces in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, it's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Trinity Christian can now relate to. They fell 3-1 to the Blue Eagles on Tuesday.
The defeat didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: Magnolia scored at least 19 points in every set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21.
Notre Dame will have to contain Lainey Jackson as she made an impact in Trinity Christian's last game. She had 24 digs and two aces. Jackson is on a roll when it comes to aces, as she's now served two or more in each of the last 14 games she's played.
Trinity Christian's loss dropped their record down to 11-13. As for Notre Dame, their victory bumped their record up to 10-21.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Monday's contest: Notre Dame has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 7.8 aces per game. However, it's not like Trinity Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Notre Dame came up short against Trinity Christian in their previous meeting back in October, falling 2-0. Can the Fighting Irish avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
