The Green Valley Gators's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their sixth straight loss. Their rough 60-34 defeat to Canyon Springs might stick with them for a while. Green Valley has struggled against the Pioneers recently, as their match on Thursday was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.
Green Valley's loss came despite strong showings from Jaelen Lautenslager and Kyra Willey. Lautenslager scored five points along with nine rebounds and seven steals, while Willey scored four points along with five rebounds. It was the first time this season that Lautenslager pulled down eight or more rebounds.
Canyon Springs was led to victory by Ariyanah Custard and Kenijae Cherry. Custard scored 17 points along with four steals, while Cherry scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and seven blocks. Custard hasn't dropped below three steals for seven straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Legardy, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds and two steals.
Green Valley dropped their record down to 5-19 with that loss, which was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.2 points per game. As for Canyon Springs, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 15-7.
Green Valley will head out on the road to face off against the Dragons at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Doral Academy Red Rock has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Canyon Springs, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Vikings at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Valley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Friday.
