Mountain Vista is 7-2 against Ponderosa since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles will take on the Mustangs at 4:15 p.m. Mountain Vista is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last seven games.
On Monday, Mountain Vista was able to grind out a solid win over Legend, taking the game 6-3.
Mountain Vista got several good pitching performances, but Jake Huddle was perhaps the best, tossing 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Huddle has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Spike Magill, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Cole Bobbin was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Mountain Vista always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .515. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Legend only posted an OBP of .273.
Meanwhile, after a string of five wins, Ponderosa's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They fell just short of Chaparral by a score of 2-0. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Mustangs were not able to get on the board.
Nick Moe was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and not a single walk).
On the hitting side, Ponderosa saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caleb Korth, who went 1-for-3 with one double. That double marked the first that Korth has hit this season.
Mountain Vista pushed their record up to 10-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Ponderosa, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 10-5.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mountain Vista hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Ponderosa struggles in that department as they've averaged .320. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Mountain Vista skirted past Ponderosa 8-7 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Golden Eagles since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
