The Williams Field Black Hawks will square off against the Perry Pumas at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Williams Field was handed a 11-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene last Thursday. They skirted past San Luis 10-9. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Black Hawks as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Jyllian Skoda was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one triple and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kam Christansen, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
Williams Field was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .471. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Perry had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. Everything went their way against the Thunderbirds as they made off with a 10-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Pumas, who have now won four matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
Brynlee Brassfield made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Brassfield was even better at the plate, firing off two home runs and six RBI while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in home runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sammie Kaufmann-Warner, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. CC Hall was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Williams Field's win bumped their record up to 6-4-1. As for Perry, their victory bumped their record up to 7-4.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Williams Field hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .409. However, it's not like Perry struggles in that department as they've averaged .388. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Williams Field suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Perry in their previous meeting back in April of 2016. Can Williams Field avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
