Westlake is 8-2 against Newbury Park since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Warriors will challenge the Panthers at 3:30 p.m. Westlake is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Westlake fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Thousand Oaks on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 2-1. The Warriors have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Presley Watters spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Westlake saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Olivia Tirsch, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Newbury Park never got on the board in their matchup two weeks ago, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Calabasas on Tuesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Coyotes a 16-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Panthers, who have now won ten games by six runs or more so far this season.
Krista Danklefs looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Newbury Park let Yasmin Topinko and Janessa Gutierrez run wild. Topinko went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI, while Gutierrez went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI Topinko has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Riley Richardson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
Newbury Park kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Newbury Park has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Westlake, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-10.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Westlake hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .325. However, it's not like Newbury Park struggles in that department as they've averaged .339. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westlake skirted past Newbury Park 5-4 in their previous matchup back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
