It was a good run, but the McAllen Memorial Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their 11-game winning streak on Friday. They lost to Vela on the road by a decisive 72-56 margin. McAllen Memorial was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Vela apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.
Vela's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jordan Bustamante, who scored 16 points along with two steals. Bustamante is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jp Olivarez, who scored 15 points along with two steals.
McAllen Memorial's defeat ended a 13-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 18-5. As for Vela, they pushed their record up to 22-5 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home.
McAllen Memorial will head out on the road to face off against McAllen at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully McAllen focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Friday. As for Vela, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Sharyland at 7:30 p.m.
