The Athens Wildcats will take on the Montoursville Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Athens is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Athens came up short against Hughesville and fell 9-6.
Brendan Cooke was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Troy Rosenbloom was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Montoursville came out on top against Loyalsock Township on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run seventh inning. The Warriors took their matchup against the Lancers 5-1. The Warriors haven't had any issues with the Lancers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Jimmy Mussina made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
In other pitching news, Logan Kirby tossed a big game, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
Mussina wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Royce Bowes, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Brayden McCourt also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Montoursville's victory bumped their record up to 15-4. As for Athens, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-4.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Athens has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .474. However, it's not like Montoursville struggles in that department as they've averaged .495. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Athens might still be hurting after the 9-2 loss they got from Montoursville in their previous meeting back in May of 2021. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
