The New Bern Bears will venture away from home to take on the Jacksonville Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. New Bern is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
New Bern barely beat Croatan the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Bears were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over the Cougars on Monday. The Bears haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Molly McGuire made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. McGuire was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Makenzie Richardson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Bella Colon was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Meanwhile, while it was Jacksonville who put the first runs on the board on Thursday, it was South Central who put up more. The Cardinals came up short against the Falcons, falling 12-2. The loss continues a trend for the Cardinals in their meetings with the Falcons: they've now lost eight in a row.
New Bern pushed their record up to 17-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Jacksonville, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-12.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. New Bern has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Jacksonville struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 11.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
New Bern took their victory against Jacksonville in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 9-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bears since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
