Manteno is 8-2 against Peotone since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. Manteno will be playing in front of their home fans against Peotone at 4:30 p.m. Manteno is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
On Saturday, Manteno needed a bit of extra time to put away Kankakee. They skirted past the Kays 6-5. The six-run effort marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring game of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
The team relied heavily on Brady Hespen, who scored a run and stole three bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.2 stolen bases per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Jake Stevens, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.
Meanwhile, Peotone lost 15-8 to Momence on Friday.
Peotone also got a good showing from Alex Chenoweth, who struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits.
On the hitting side, Ruben Velasco made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one double. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Tyler Leitelt, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.
Even though they lost, Peotone lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Manteno pushed their record up to 5-0 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Peotone, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.
Peotone's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Manteno hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .386. It's a different story for Peotone, though, as they've only averaged .212. Will they be able to contain Manteno's hitters?
Everything went Manteno's way against Peotone when the teams last played back in March of 2024, as Manteno made off with an 11-1 win. Will Manteno repeat their success, or does Peotone has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
