The De Anza Dons's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They fell to Saint Mary 59-53. De Anza was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Saint Mary's apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.
Despite the loss, De Anza had strong showings from Ahmari Otis, who scored 18 points, and Malakai Wise, who scored 15 points. That was a full 34% of De Anza's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jaleel Jackson, who scored nine points.
De Anza dropped their record down to 6-11 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Saint Mary's, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 10-9.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. De Anza the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome St. Patrick-St. Vincent at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th. St. Patrick-St. Vincent presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than De Anza in California (St. Patrick-St. Vincent is ranked 225th, while De Anza is ranked 592nd). Saint Mary's won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Envision Academy on January 20th. Hopefully Envision Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Friday.
