The Denver City Mustangs will venture away from home to challenge the Presidio Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Denver City will bounce into Friday's contest after beating Lamesa, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mustangs were the clear victors by a 19-8 margin over the Tornadoes on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won 14 matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Denver City got a massive performance out of Ashley Martinez, who went 1-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI Martinez has posted since back in March. Eva Gonzales was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Meanwhile, Presidio came up short against Kermit last Friday, falling 20-11. The Blue Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Caro Lares and America Padron did some serious damage despite the final result: Lares got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases, one triple, and one run, while Padron got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Lares has hit this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Luisamaria Valenzuela, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Denver City pushed their record up to 20-7 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.3 runs over those games. As for Presidio, their loss dropped their record down to 3-16.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Denver City hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .478. However, it's not like Presidio struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Denver City might still be hurting after the 15-2 defeat they got from Presidio in their previous matchup back in May of 2015. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
