Basketball Recap: Nucla Piles Up the Points Against Soroco

Nucla won against Caprock Academy on Friday with 59 points and they decided to stick to that point total again on Saturday. The Nucla Mustangs took their match with ease, bagging a 59-15 victory over the Soroco Rams. The Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four contests by 41 points or more this season.

Nucla found their leader in sophomore Lantry Galley, who went 9 for 17 on her way to 20 points and five steals. Those five steals set a new season-high mark for Galley. The team also got some help courtesy of Viviana Zunich, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 10 points in addition to eight rebounds and five steals.

When it comes to explaining why Soroco lost, don't look at Kolbie Pierce. Despite the final result, she posted eight points along with six boards and three steals. Pierce is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played.

The win was the fourth in a row for Nucla, bringing their record for this year to 6-1. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 37.5 points. As for Soroco, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-4.

Nucla will head out to challenge Telluride at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Nucla's defense has only allowed 23.9 points per game this season, so Telluride's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Soroco, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 68-18 loss against Sanford on the 19th.
