3A Region III District 21 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Bridge City was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 3A Region III District 21. The Cardinals defeated Buna 28-24 earlier in the week.
West Orange-Stark extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Hamshire-Fannett, 44-0. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Mustangs.
Bridge City's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Daniel Faulk threw for 172 and two touchdowns and Tanner Cervanka had 62 yards receiving. On the ground Ashton Hunter chipped in 165 yards. Hunter helped Bridge City's passing attack out by catching two balls for 62 yards.
Hardin-Jefferson's Jared Gieseke and Andrew Martel have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Gieseke has thrown for 368 yards this season, while Martel, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 13 catches for 195 yards. Cris Stump's team's Hunter leads the league in rushing yards with 516.
A big matchup in 3A Region III District 21 this week will be when the Hawks take on West Orange-Stark. As it stands, Hardin-Jefferson is in third, while the Mustangs are in first.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when David Martel's team takes on West Orange-Stark. The Hawks have allowed 69 points this season, while the Mustangs have given up 20.
The Longhorns moved up to 562 from 598 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Hamshire-Fannett was able to make the jump by beating Hamshire-Fannett 44-0.
