The Bayfield Wolverines fell victim to the Delta Panthers''s stalwart defense on Friday and couldn't make it onto the board. They were outmatched by the Panthers on the road and fell 49-0. While losing is never fun, Bayfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado football rankings (they are ranked 146th, while Delta is ranked 31st).
Cody Ross threw for 144 yards on 15 of 25 attempts. Hunter Mars was his top target, picking up 43 receiving yards.
Leading Delta to victory were Jovanny Romero and Ty Reed. Romero rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries, while Reed threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 passes. Romero was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 55 yards. Another player making a difference was Talan Hulet, who rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Bayfield's defeat was their eighth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 1-8. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 10-0 Bloomfield and 7-2 Moffat County (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 65.7% over those games). As for Delta, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 9-0.
Bayfield will be playing at home against Pagosa Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pagosa Springs will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Delta, they will head out on the road to face off against Montezuma-Cortez at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
