The Holmes Huskies will head out to challenge the Sotomayor WILDCATS at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Holmes was handed a seven-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Warren 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Huskies have posted since March 20, 2024.
Lauren Gonzalez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on nine hits. Those hits were her first of the season.
At the plate, Holmes' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Alexis Olvera, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Olvera brought in this season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Sotomayor). They put the hurt on Marshall with a sharp 17-4 victory on Tuesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.
Sotomayor let Shayla Velez and London Echavarria run wild. Velez scored three runs while going 3-for-3, while Echavarria went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Avea Munoz was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Sotomayor always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .615. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marshall only posted an OBP of .435.
Sotomayor has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. Holmes now has a winning record of 5-4.
Holmes beat Sotomayor 7-2 in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Does Holmes have another victory up their sleeve, or will Sotomayor turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
