After flying high against Union last Friday, Leake Academy came back down to earth. The Leake Academy Rebels fell just short of the Heritage Academy Patriots by a score of 34-32 on Friday. The Rebels were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2023.
Despite the loss, Leake Academy still got an impressive performance from George Wilcox, who threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 73 yards on only seven carries. The dominant performance gave Wilcox a new career-high in rushing yards. Matthan Weaver also helped out as he racked up 105 receiving yards.
Leake Academy's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of Matthew Nowell and Jack Harkins. Nowell also set a new season high mark in receiving yards with 117.
The loss snapped Leake Academy's winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-2 record. As for Heritage Academy, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 5-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Leake Academy will head out to take on Copiah Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Leake Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 point or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Copiah Academy likes a good challenge. As for Heritage Academy, they will venture away from home to square off against Lamar at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Heritage Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 122 points over their last three matchups.
