Baseball Game Preview: Cumby Trojans vs. Yantis Owls

For the second straight game, Cumby will face off against Yantis. The Trojans will host the Owls at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Cumby has four straight victories, Yantis has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Last Tuesday, Cumby made easy work of Yantis and carried off a 12-1 win.

Montgomery Benton and Jaxon Hudson made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Benton pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Hudson struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). He is becoming a predictor of Cumby's success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 2-1 (and 3-13 when he doesn't). At the plate, Benton scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Hudson scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. That's the most hits Benton has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Cumby got a massive performance out of Channing Herman, who scored four runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. The Trojans are 4-1 when Herman posts two or more runs, but 1-13 otherwise. Osvaldo Ruiz was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one double.

Cumby always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .594. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Cumby pushed their record up to 5-14 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Yantis, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-10.
