Calhoun hasn't had much luck against Routt Catholic recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Warriors will challenge the Rockets at 4:30 p.m. Calhoun is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Calhoun lost 13-1 to West Central co-op [Winchester-Bluffs] on Tuesday.
Calhoun saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Klocke, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
Meanwhile, Routt Catholic's hitters rose to the challenge against a Cougars pitching crew that boasted an average of only 4.04 runs allowed on Monday. The Rockets blew past West Central co-op [Winchester-Bluffs] 13-4. The Rockets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by six runs or more this season.
Brock Runyon tossed a big game, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off eight hits. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
At the plate, Jacob Brown and Eli Olson did most of the damage at the plate: Brown went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Olson went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Olson is becoming a predictor of Routt Catholic's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 8-11 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Talon Thompson, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs.
The victory made it two in a row for Routt Catholic and bumps their season record up to 17-11. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 5 runs in those games. As for Calhoun, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Calhoun has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Routt Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Calhoun came out on top in a nail-biter against Routt Catholic in their previous matchup back in April, sneaking past 6-4. Will the Warriors repeat their success, or do the Rockets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
