The Morgantown Mohigans will take on the Robert C. Byrd Eagles at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
Morgantown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Washington, who was ranked 19th at the time (Morgantown was ranked tenth). The Mohigans walked away with a 7-2 win over the Patriots on Friday.
Morgantown got a massive performance out of Vincent Aloi, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Quincy Joseph was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
While Robert C. Byrd didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-20), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Buckhannon-Upshur on Tuesday, sneaking past 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Eagles have posted since April 11, 2024.
Ashton Shaffer was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Cooper Floyd, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Morgantown's win was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Robert C. Byrd, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Morgantown has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Robert C. Byrd struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Morgantown came out on top in a nail-biter against Robert C. Byrd in their previous meeting back in May of 2023, sneaking past 3-1. Do the Mohigans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
