If the Union City Indians were feeling good off their 56-32 takedown of the Anderson Prep Academy Jets last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Union City took a 50-36 bruising from Union County on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Union City of the 48-34 loss they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Union City lost, one person who can't be blamed is Luane Schoonbroodt. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. Schoonbroodt is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Oaklee Reichard, who scored ten points along with three steals.
Even though they lost, Union City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Union County only pulled down seven offensive rebounds.
Katie McCashland was her usual excellent self, scoring 28 points along with eight steals and five rebounds for Union County. As a matter of fact, that's the most points McCashland has scored all season. Ally Gray was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Union City's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-10. As for Union County, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Union City the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Seton Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th. Union County will take on Knightstown at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Knightstown is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
