New Castle hasn't had much luck against Shelbyville recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Trojans will take on the Golden Bears at 5:30 p.m. New Castle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 13.2 runs per game this season.
On Monday, New Castle came up short against Delta and fell 10-6. The loss was the Trojans' first of the season.
Sydney Dobbs was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI, and one run.
Dobbs wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Emily Wells, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3. Calleigh Clayborn also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Shelbyville came into Monday's game having lost four straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They had just enough and edged out Pendleton Heights 7-5. Surprisingly, this marked the fourth straight game that the away team has come away the victor.
Gracie Crafton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Addison Stieneker was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kali Laycock, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.
Shelbyville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.
The win got Shelbyville back to even at 5-5. As for New Castle, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
Shelbyville's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: New Castle has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Shelbyville, though, as they've been averaging 9.5 hits. Given New Castle's sizable advantage in that area, the Golden Bears will need to find a way to close that gap.
New Castle suffered a grim 8-0 defeat to Shelbyville when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
