Somerset took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They came out on top against the Cole Cougars by a score of 53-40. For the Bulldogs, this counts as revenge for the 45-22 victory the Cougars walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2024.
Somerset found their leader in sophomore Evelyn Hernandez, who went 6-for-15 en route to 22 points along with eight rebounds and six steals. Karla Hernandez was another key player, putting up seven points and 12 boards.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Alexys Cheney, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Makaylee Chambers, who shot 50% from the field on her way to 17 points and seven boards.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Somerset will host Southwest Legacy at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Cole, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Veterans Memorial at 6:30 p.m.
