GILBERT, Ariz. -
Highland (Gilbert, Ariz.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as
Noah Miller kicked a field goal with under a minute left, bringing the team to victory over
Mesa (Ariz.) 24-21.
The Jackrabbits pulled ahead on a touchdown, and subsequently went into halftime leading 14-7. The Hawks scored the winning points with a field goal by Miller that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring seven points in the third, Highland still trailed by 7 points going into the fourth quarter. But 10 points in the fourth helped HHS pull out the victory.
Mesa's
Eugene McIlhenny played well. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
The Gilbert school's most effective player was
Blake Young. The junior quarterback threw three touchdowns. He has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
A 31-21 Highland victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Highland, which was coming off a 28-14 defeat at the hands of Mountain View in its previous game.
Highland (6-3) will play a non-conference game against Red Mountain next week, while Mesa (2-7) will take on Mountain View in a I Section III game.
