On Saturday, the Kelly Walsh Trojans faced the Riverton Wolverines in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Kelly Walsh fell just short of Riverton by a score of 43-41. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Kelly Walsh has suffered yet this season.
Several Trojans players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jack Nicholls, who scored 11 points. Mason Eager was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Even though they lost, Kelly Walsh smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Riverton only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.
Riverton got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Darrick DeVries out in front who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Lucas, who scored eight points.
Kelly Walsh has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season. As for Riverton, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Kelly Walsh and Rock Springs will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 26th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Rock Springs is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. Riverton will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Jackson Hole at 7:30 p.m. on February 2nd.
